Geeta Iyengar, in conjunction with Rita Keller and Kerstin Khattab, has created the most extensive manual ever written on Iyengar Yoga and pregnancy. Iyengar Yoga for Motherhood will help you to feel supported in your Yoga practice during pregnancy as no other resource can. Whether you would like to build strength and confidence for the life-and-body-changing process of birth and motherhood, or simply wish to continue your current practice of asana safely and consciously during your term, don’t miss out on using this book as the inexhaustible resource that it is.
This accessible and extensively visual book provides an encyclopedic level of information and guidance to expectant mothers and their partners. The guide includes a glossary for problems which may arise during your term with corresponding asana to provide relief, as well as specific sequences for each trimester, including preconception, delivery, breastfeeding, and how to rebuild your practice after birth.
Beyond physical guidance, Iyengar Yoga for Motherhood provides the level of spiritual insight and wisdom that you would expect to come from within the Iyengar lineage. The authors offer an Ayurvedic perspective on procreation, from dietary guidance to the spiritual significance of pregnancy. This guide provides clear eloquence in its reference to ancient teachings. It is truly the work of masters.
A resource for beginning and advanced students, and bound to become indispensible for each, Iyengar Yoga for Motherhood is a benefit to have at your side, spread out with you on your living room floor, and all the way to the delivery room.
Though the general Iyengar method is named for her father, Dr. Geeta Iyengar (daughter to the Yogacharya and his student since childhood) developed special Iyengar techniques for women, gaining international acclaim with her book Yoga: A Gem for Women. An ayurvedic doctor and yoga master in her own right, she has become the leading female exponent of Iyengar yoga in the world, teaching under the guidance of her father at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune, India, for more than forty years and offering “megaclasses” in America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Rita Keller has taught therapeutic yoga and yoga for pregnant women since 1989. She later received certification as a senior teacher of Iyengar Yoga from the Yogacharya himself. Since 1991, Keller has travelled annually to the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India, to receive ongoing training and participate in teachers’ seminars on Pranayama, yoga for pregnant women and new mothers, as well as other topics of special interest to women. She is the director of the Iyengar Yoga Institute Rhein-Ahr (Bad Neuenahr), and a member of the Professionals’ Committee of the German Iyengar Yoga Association (Berlin, Bad Neuenahr) and the German Iyengar Yoga Teachers’ Association.
A physician at the department for cardiology at the University Hospital in Bern, Switzerland, Kerstin Khattab has been practicing and teaching Iyengar yoga for more than fifteen years. She studied Ayurveda at the Tilak Maharastra Vidyapeeth in Pune, at Amala Hospital in Kerala, India, and in Kathmandu, Nepal. She also regularly participates in ongoing training at the RIMYI in Pune, where she is an assistant in therapy classes.
